Long thaught to be native only to the midwest but recent research shows that Black-Eyed Susan was in Maryland in clonial times. Black-eyed Susans typically stay in a basal rosette their first year, and then produce upright plants with flowers in their second year, although it can produce flowers the first year if germinated eary in the season.
